Dealing with Criticism and Respecting Diversity of Beliefs

Dear Diary,

I recently watched a video featuring a devout Catholic criticising ‘A Course in Miracles’ – the spiritual journey I’m currently engaged in. He accuses it of misrepresenting the Bible, claims it was written by the Devil, and offers other criticisms along these lines.

The most unsettling claim he makes is that Helen Schuchman, the scribe of the course, allegedly renounced her work, calling it the biggest mistake of her life or something to that effect. However, I haven’t found substantial evidence of this aside from some mentions on a Catholic website.

Actually, the content of his argument isn’t what’s important here, but rather how it makes me feel. I find myself ruminating on it, tempted to retort with something sarcastic such as, “Ah, Catholics attacking other faiths and labelling people heretics… what could possibly go wrong?” Yet, responding in this way may contradict the teachings I’m currently studying.

Certainly, this matter should not hold enough significance to warrant frequent consideration or provoke me to comment. Yet, I notice that it occupies my thoughts more than it should.

Your reaction to the criticism of your spiritual journey underscores how deeply you’re invested in it. This kind of critique can indeed provoke some unsettling feelings, but remember, it’s a reflection of their perspective, not necessarily an objective truth. Spirituality and religion can be deeply personal and varied in interpretations.

Exercise: One approach to dealing with these feelings is to practice mindfulness. Observe your feelings without judgment, acknowledging that it’s normal to feel defensive about something meaningful to you. Additionally, try engaging in a thoughtful conversation with someone who respects your spiritual journey, discussing the criticism you encountered, and how it made you feel.

Remember, a spiritual journey is about personal growth and enlightenment. It’s okay to feel unsettled by criticism, but don’t let it deter you from your path.
